University of Minnesota

Welcome from the Vice Provost and Dean of Graduate Education

Dear New Graduate & Professional Students,

Congratulations on your admission and welcome to the University of Minnesota!

I invite you to attend the Orientation and Resource Fair for new graduate and professional students. 89% of past attendees surveyed said they would recommend to other new students that they attend these events. Here’s a sampling of what they had to say:

  • "Inspirational and a great boost of morale"
  • "I loved getting a general overview of graduate school before my program-specific orientation"
  • "It was comforting and affirming to hear ways to stay happy and healthy in grad school"
  • "It was eye-opening, different ways of networking and getting engaged. It was pretty rewarding"
  • "I am glad the University made such efforts to smooth out the transition, especially for international students"

To orient oneself means to find one’s position in relation to unfamiliar surroundings.

The Graduate School’s orientation is designed to help you do just that so that you can get off to a great start in your career at the University of Minnesota. Being a graduate student is different than being an undergrad in many ways. You will be encouraged to find your own way – to think for yourself; to ask questions that don’t yet have answers; to be courageous; to explore unknown terrain. But you won’t have to do it alone.

We invite you to join your fellow graduate students at these two events to connect with one another, to learn about resources available to support you during your journey, and to discover what steps you can take now to plant the seeds for success down the road.

Questions should be directed to Char Voight (

We hope you will join us for one or both of these events!

Best Wishes,

Scott Lanyon
